When you have accumulated scrap ferrous metal in your yard or at a production site, it becomes reasonable to consider where to sell it for the best value. Several factors influence the final decision, where the price of accepting scrap metal is not always the most important or decisive factor. There are several reasons for this.

    Firstly, weighing accuracy: Dishonest scrap metal buyers may not weigh a portion of the scrap metal accurately or deduct an excessively high percentage for impurities. While there is a percentage of allowable impurities specified in the standard for scrap ferrous metal, sometimes this percentage can vary, and it is important to clarify it before visiting a scrap metal reception center. Typically, the impurity percentage ranges from 1.5% to 6%, with 3% being the most common, resulting in a deduction of 200 UAH per tonne. There is also the concept of "trash" (musor), which is assessed on-site. For example, a team leader or scrap metal buyer superficially inspects the scrap metal and estimates the amount of trash. For instance, a refrigerator may contain 20 kg of trash (plastic, insulation), while a gas stove may have 5 kg of trash (rubber, hoses, glass).

    Secondly, the type of scrap metal: Scrap metal can come in various forms. The least expensive type is galvanized profile and turnings, which are priced 20-30% lower than the value of regular scrap metal. The most valuable scrap metal is railway scrap, such as rails, sleepers, and couplers, as they are priced higher than ordinary scrap metal. To sell railway scrap, proper documentation is necessary, and such transactions are only conducted through a contract. No official scrap metal reception center will accept railway scrap without the required documents.
